Director Christopher McQuarrie, who has written and directed the "Mission: Impossible" films from the fifth through the upcoming eighth installment, has become Tom Cruise's most crucial creative partner over the past decade. During this time, McQuarrie has also been involved as a writer or producer on nearly every non-"Mission: Impossible" film starring Cruise. This collaboration extends to the previously announced "Top Gun 3" and "Days of Thunder 2" from Paramount Pictures.

Many believe that "Top Gun: Maverick" set an incredibly high bar, making a third film difficult to execute at the same level of quality. However, during a recent interview on the "Happy Sad Confused" podcast, McQuarrie expressed confidence, stating that conceiving the third installment wasn't difficult. As the writer for both the second and third films, he revealed he already has the story figured out. When asked if he would step into the director's chair for the sequel, McQuarrie admitted he hasn't considered that possibility at all.
The situation is similar for the "Days of Thunder" sequel. McQuarrie has already developed a preliminary outline and guarantees the plot will be different from "Maverick." He promised not to repeat the same formula just because it's another long-awaited sequel, explaining that "Days of Thunder" is a completely different film and its cultural impact is different from "Top Gun."
