Nearly eight years have passed since the release of "Alien: Covenant," the second installment in the "Alien" prequel series, and the cliffhanger ending remains unresolved. This largely stems from "Covenant's" declining box office performance and predominantly negative critical reception. Despite this, many loyal fans still hoped director Ridley Scott, who initiated the prequel storyline, would return to complete the planned sequels.
However, Scott himself appears to have no such intention, having recently stated in an interview with Screen Rant that he's "had enough."

Scott first offered a concise review of the entire franchise, stating that he felt the series weakened after the fourth installment. He believed his own entries were "pretty good," and Jim (referring to James Cameron)'s film was also good, but he had to admit that the others were "not so good." Scott recalled thinking at the time that a franchise which should have been as significant as "Star Trek" and "Star Wars" was ending. He considered both "Star Trek" and "Star Wars" outstanding, particularly George (Lucas)'s first film, which he found groundbreaking—as pioneering as "2001: A Space Odyssey." For Scott, Lucas's film was crucial in terms of cinematic language and future direction. He mentioned that he received the offer for "Alien" about a year after Lucas had finished his film.

Scott continued by explaining that he directed one film, and then the series went dormant (referring to the years after the fourth film's release). Years later, he decided to revive the franchise, working with screenwriter Damon Lindelof to develop "Prometheus" from scratch. He noted that "Prometheus" was well-received, and audiences genuinely wanted more, prompting him to push for a swift follow-up. He then directed "Covenant," which he also considered a success. Regarding the current state of the franchise, Scott expressed that he believes he has "had enough" and simply hopes the series can "go even further."
The "Alien" franchise currently has two main focuses: the upcoming "Alien" TV series, set to debut in August, and the theatrical release "Alien: Romulus." Scott is not directing either of these projects, and his remarks suggest he has no intention of deeply controlling their creative direction. Therefore, it seems highly unlikely that "Covenant" will receive a direct sequel, though some of its established elements might be reincorporated, much like the Engineers' technology reappearing in "Romulus."
