Three years ago, Universal Pictures and rapper Snoop Dogg announced plans for a biographical film chronicling Snoop Dogg's life story. After three years in development, the project has finally secured its new director and lead actor. Regarding the director, Deadline exclusively reported today that Craig Brewer, known for helming "Coming 2 America" and "Dolemite Is My Name," is set to take the reins.

Originally, three years ago, Universal had tapped Allen Hughes, one half of The Hughes Brothers directing duo ("The Book of Eli"), to direct. However, Hughes later exited the project, leading to Brewer's current appointment. Joe Robert Cole, screenwriter for the "Black Panther" franchise, remains attached to pen the script.
As for the actor portraying Snoop Dogg, Jonathan Daviss, who has gained prominence in recent years for his role in the Netflix series "Outer Banks" (pictured above), has been cast. A release date for the film has not yet been announced.
