The 1987 parody comedy "Spaceballs" holds a special place in the hearts of movie fans, and for over a decade, a sequel has been intermittently in development. It wasn't until last June that MGM officially greenlit the production of a second installment. Now, a year later, the studio has released an early teaser ahead of filming, announcing that the sequel is slated for a 2027 release, which will coincide with the original film's 40th anniversary.
True to its satirical nature, the newly released teaser immediately spoofs the opening crawl of its primary target, the "Star Wars" saga. It playfully jabs at the current proliferation of film franchises, noting the endless stream of prequels, spin-offs, and spin-off prequels, even lamenting that "Spaceballs," originally a standalone film, is now succumbing to the sequel trend.

Josh Greenbaum, director of "Strays," is set to helm the sequel. Comedy star Josh Gad, alongside Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez, the writing duo behind "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem," are co-writing the script.
Additionally, Deadline previously reported that original cast members Bill Pullman, Daphne Zuniga, Rick Moranis, and legendary comedy master Mel Brooks (who also wrote, directed, and starred in the original) are all confirmed to return. New additions to the cast include Keke Palmer and co-writer Josh Gad. The Hollywood Reporter further added that Pullman's son, Lewis Pullman, is also in talks to join the film.
