The critically acclaimed Netflix crime series "Mindhunter" has been in limbo since its second season debuted in 2019. Over the past six years, the cast and crew, including executive producer and director David Fincher, have frequently voiced their desire to return. Unfortunately, the first two seasons' high production costs and viewership numbers that didn't meet Netflix's benchmarks have kept plans for future seasons stalled.

However, Holt McCallany, one of the series' stars, recently revealed in an interview with Screen Rant that future installments of "Mindhunter" could potentially be reimagined as a film trilogy. McCallany recounted, "A few months ago, I had a meeting with David Fincher in his office, and he told me that 'Mindhunter' might return as three two-hour films, but I think it's just a small chance. I know some writers are working on ideas, but you know, David has to be happy with the script."

McCallany continued, "I feel very lucky and honored to have gotten to do that show at all. I would love it if it were to return. I think, like I said, he gave me a little bit of hope when I had that meeting with him, but the sun, the moon, and the stars would all have to align. The good news is that we also recently collaborated with Netflix on the film "The Killer," so these films would also be for Netflix. So I think that in terms of dates and logistics, it could all be worked out, but it has to do, you know, with David really having the time and the inclination and being happy, you know, with the material. And, you know, that's a big question mark."
