Johnny Depp's third directorial feature, "Modi: Three Days on the Wing of Madness," is set to hit UK cinemas on July 11. To promote the film, Depp sat down for a lengthy interview with British newspaper The Times, where he inevitably discussed his highly publicized defamation trial against ex-wife Amber Heard three years ago.
When asked if he regretted airing his private life in court, Depp remained resolute, stating he had no regrets. He believed that if he hadn't done so, the accusations would have been accepted as truth. Therefore, even when some around him suggested "waiting for things to be forgotten," he refused to give up on clearing his name.

Depp reflected that his conflicts with Heard, in some ways, mirrored the constant arguments within his own childhood home and his strained relationship with his parents. However, Depp also emphasized that his mother, in her later years, ultimately showed a kind side, unlike her younger self, when Depp, as a child, both deeply loved and feared her.
The trial, Depp said, exposed the true nature of many people. He described how some individuals who had attended his children's birthday parties and held his kids later turned on him, lying in court or gossiping behind his back. Depp specifically named his former agent, Tracey Jacobs, in this context. Yet, he also expressed understanding for those who were afraid to publicly support him, acknowledging that making the "right choice" could be frightening for them.

Depp characterized himself as a "crash test dummy" before the MeToo movement: "I was before MeToo. I was like a crash test dummy for the MeToo era. This all happened before the Harvey Weinstein thing exploded" (Heard's public accusations against Depp predated Weinstein's sexual assault allegations by a year). He continued, "I took all that, so I wanted the people I know in the entertainment industry to see that I'm serious, and you can keep being politically correct and woke."
