Since the cast was first announced, some fans have worried that the new DC Universe installment "Superman" features too many characters. The film's expansive roster not only includes core figures like Lex Luthor and Lois Lane but also introduces Hawkgirl, Mister Terrific, Green Lantern Guy Gardner, Maxwell Lord, Metamorpho, and The Engineer of The Authority. This has led to concerns that the plot could become disjointed and chaotic with so many players involved.

However, director James Gunn has consistently clarified that these characters simply fill out the film's main and supporting cast, urging audiences not to worry. In a recent interview with Esquire Philippines, he reiterated this point and offered further assurances that the story will be easy to follow. "No, it's not a problem, because I've screened the movie for a lot of people, and the movie is not confusing," Gunn stated. "So I'm getting this from the facts, that it's not confusing."
Gunn continued, explaining his approach: "We're used to movies that have a protagonist. Superman is definitely the protagonist of the movie. He has work friends and he has friends he hangs out with. I'm not sure if The Authority are his hangout friends, and I'm not sure if his Daily Planet colleagues are his work friends or his hangout friends, but those are two different groups of friends from different parts of his life. And just because they have emblems on their costumes or superpowers doesn't mean they're any different than any other supporting character in any other movie. I think 'Oppenheimer' has something like three times the amount of speaking roles that we have. So I think the audience is ready for it."
