Pixar Animation Studios, once primarily known for its groundbreaking original animated features, has increasingly focused on sequels in recent years. Films like "Toy Story 4" and "Inside Out 2" have already been released, with "Toy Story 5" and a third "The Incredibles" film also confirmed to be in the pipeline. While many outside observers express concern over this trend, Pixar's current Chief Creative Officer, Pete Docter (pictured below), recently admitted in an interview with Fast Company that this is a necessary business strategy for the studio.

Docter noted that since the COVID-19 pandemic, audiences who drifted away have not fully returned to theaters and still show a strong preference for sequels. To mitigate financial risks, Pixar's current rhythm is roughly one original film followed by one sequel, alternating in this pattern. Docter emphasized that this doesn't diminish the importance of original works, stating that the studio "needs to find what audiences want before they even know they want it, because if we just give them more of what they already know, we're just going to make 'Toy Story 27'."

Beyond "Toy Story 5" and "The Incredibles 3," more sequels are undoubtedly on the horizon. For instance, well-known entertainment journalist Jeff Sneider recently revealed on his YouTube show "The Hot Mic" that "Ratatouille" is reportedly in preparation for a second installment. He stated, "I heard this a while ago, and it was denied at the time, but I didn't really believe their denial. I'm pretty sure there's going to be a sequel." Given Docter's strategy of balancing original films with sequels, a "Ratatouille" sequel certainly seems to have a strong possibility of becoming a reality.
