Reddit Fan Art Forced "Spider-Man: No Way Home" Director to Rewrite Key Scene

"Spider-Man: No Way Home" director Jon Watts recently revealed in an interview with Collider that a piece of fan art from Reddit unexpectedly changed an iconic scene featuring the return of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. The original concept from the production team was almost identical to fan predictions. To avoid the pitfall of audiences guessing the plot, Watts made a last-minute rewrite, leading to the surprise scene at Ned's grandmother's house.

Watts recalled that while filming and writing the script, the team initially planned for the previous two Spider-Men to appear when Tom Holland's Peter was distraught after Aunt May's death.

"At that time, the scene we envisioned was Peter being very sad, and then two portals would open, and Tobey and Andrew would just appear — probably on a rooftop," Watts stated. However, one day he saw a fan-drawn concept on Reddit that perfectly matched this idea.

The artwork depicted two portals opening, with the two Spider-Men emerging against a gloomy rooftop backdrop. Watts immediately realized, "No, we can't shoot it like that. If everyone expects it, we have to do something unexpected." He then had a sudden inspiration, deciding to have the meeting take place at Ned's grandmother's house, an unexpected yet narratively logical setting.

"This sequence was the first time in the entire film that we stepped away from Peter's main narrative to follow Ned and MJ's movements. They needed to hide, and the most natural choice was Ned's grandmother's house, and that's how the scene was born," Watts explained. This reunion became one of the film's climaxes, driving "Spider-Man: No Way Home" to a global box office of over $1.9 billion, making it one of the highest-grossing films of the post-pandemic era.

Tobey Maguire later admitted he would be happy to play Spider-Man again, stating that "If someone called me and asked me to come in and even just hang out or read a script, I'd say yes." Andrew Garfield has also repeatedly expressed his willingness to return, provided the story is "weird, unique, and creative," ideally as experimental as the animated film "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse."

As for the current Spider-Man, Tom Holland, he is confirmed to star in the next Spider-Man film, "Spider-Man: Brand New Day," which is slated for a July 2026 release.
