Despite its theatrical run concluding with a disappointing box office performance, the sequel, "M3GAN 2.0," which arrives three years after the original, might still find a larger audience in the streaming and physical media markets. Universal Pictures plans to release an extended version after its theatrical run, a move confirmed by director Gerard Johnstone, who helmed both installments, during a recent exclusive interview with Discussing Film.

In the interview, Johnstone stated that an unrated version would be released, featuring new scenes and additional content. He noted the challenge of keeping theatrical runtimes under two hours, but assured that the unrated cut would include material not seen in theaters. He also humorously pointed out that many narrative-driving lines from the trailer were ultimately not spoken by M3GAN in the final film. Johnstone elaborated that studios need promotional material, and trailers are sometimes completed before final decisions are made on whether certain scenes fit the theatrical cut's pacing, even if that content still shapes the film's universe.
The original "M3GAN" also received an unrated extended cut, though that version primarily restored violence and profanity trimmed for its PG-13 theatrical rating, resulting in nearly identical runtimes for both editions. However, Johnstone's recent remarks suggest the sequel's extended cut will be far more substantial, promising the reincorporation of significant plot elements.
