Following the theatrical release of the DCU's inaugural film, "Superman," in July 2025, director James Gunn confirmed that Milly Alcock, who plays Supergirl Kara Zor-El, will star in her solo film in 2026. Alcock has already made an appearance in "Superman," giving fans an an early glimpse of the Kryptonian cousin.
In the latter half of "Superman," Supergirl Kara appears in a drunken state at the Fortress of Solitude, solely to retrieve her pet dog, Krypto. This scene was not only one of the film's surprises but also marked her first on-screen appearance with Superman, setting up the dual narrative for both Kryptonian survivors in the DCU.
In a recent interview with ScreenRant, James Gunn personally confirmed, "Yes, that's her. She's a mess, a real mess."
Gunn stated that this characterization stems from Kara's vastly different life experiences compared to Kal-El (Superman). While Superman was raised on Earth by healthy, loving adoptive parents, Kara, who is older than Superman, witnessed her family and friends vanish along with their home planet. Consequently, her upbringing was filled with trauma and loss, naturally shaping her personality and approach to life.
The "Supergirl" film will adapt the DC Comics original "Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow," written by Tom King and drawn by Bilquis Evely. Its overall tone will be distinctly different from "Superman."
Gunn revealed that most of the film will be set in space, exploring Kara's journey of self-discovery amidst loneliness and struggle.
Additionally, Krypto, who also appeared in "Superman," will have more interactions with Kara in "Supergirl." Gunn hinted that Krypto's relationship with his two Kryptonian masters will be markedly different, adding more tension and intrigue to the characters' dynamics.
