When "The Forever Purge," the fifth installment in "The Purge" franchise, was released four years ago, franchise mastermind James DeMonaco — who directed the first three films and penned all five — teased that a sixth chapter was already in development. Frank Grillo (pictured below), the star of the second and third films, also personally confirmed his return. Now, after four years of development, DeMonaco has finally offered an update in an exclusive interview with the horror-focused outlet Bloody Disgusting.

DeMonaco stated: "I just finished a draft of the script. My producer, Sébastien Lemercier, has read several drafts and given me some notes, and we just turned it in to Jason Blum [President of Blumhouse Productions, the company behind 'The Purge' series] for review. I'm very happy with it, and I hope they like it. I think it's cool and interesting. We're hoping to shoot next year, but if time allows, maybe we could even shoot by the end of this year. But now it's all up to the powers that be, so we'll wait and see."

DeMonaco further teased: "Some of everyone's favorite characters might return. I can't say which ones yet, but a few might come back, and I think they're characters both I and the audience love. Also, we've created some truly great female heroes in the sixth installment. They are all incredible women. We've had great female characters before, but this time we'll see true warrior women who will appear in ways we've never actually explored on Purge Night. Writing this installment was really fun, and I wrote it with my wife, so I got some great female perspectives, which made the process really interesting."
