Former "Superman" actor Brandon Routh recently shared his thoughts on James Gunn's upcoming "Superman" film while promoting his new project, "Ick." Routh not only lauded new lead David Corenswet's performance but also admitted he "cried no less than three times" during the viewing.
Routh previously starred in 2006's "Superman Returns," directed by Bryan Singer. The film paid homage to the classic 1978 "Superman," making Routh the first actor to don the cape and red trunks after Christopher Reeve.
Although "Superman Returns" didn't meet box office expectations and a sequel never materialized, Routh reprised his role years later in the Arrowverse's massive crossover event, "Crisis on Infinite Earths," portraying the older "Kingdom Come" version of Superman. He also played The Atom in the Arrowverse, a role beloved by fans.
Far from harboring any resentment, Routh expressed genuine excitement for the new "Superman" reboot. In an interview with Variety, he stated, "I really liked it, David was great. I actually cried three times."
He specifically mentioned that the dialogue between Clark and Lois in their apartment, as well as family-related plot points, deeply moved him. Routh noted, "I watched this film from a different perspective, especially those moments depicting Superman's inner struggles, which really touched me."
This new "Superman," starring Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan, is set three years after the hero's public reveal and three months into his relationship with Lois. Routh pointed out that this timeline allows the narrative to quickly delve into the characters' emotional layers, showing audiences how Superman navigates the conflict between love and responsibility.
Despite having missed out on a sequel opportunity, Routh remains confident in the future of the new DC Universe. "I'm really looking forward to the future development of the DC Universe," he said. "This successful reboot is good news for all DC lovers, and there are many exciting characters waiting to be explored."
Jack Quaid, who voices Superman in the animated series "My Adventures with Superman," also publicly praised the film on Threads.
