Magic: The Gathering Unveils Marvel Crossover Set: "Spider-Verse" Cards Revealed, "Spider-Ham" Steals the Spotlight

"Magic: The Gathering" is set to launch a new "Universes Beyond" series in September 2025, featuring a highly anticipated collaboration with Marvel's iconic hero, Spider-Man. Following the acclaimed "Final Fantasy" crossover, this new set, starring Spider-Man and his multiverse allies, is poised to ignite a fresh wave of excitement among players and fans alike.

Wizards of the Coast recently offered a sneak peek at the first six card designs. Five of these were exclusively unveiled by IGN, while the sixth was previewed by Marvel on social media, with a promise of a full reveal during San Diego Comic-Con. The designs not only feature classic characters but also heavily reference "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse," bringing many fan-favorite variant Spider-People into the game.

The cards revealed so far include a double-sided Peter Parker / Amazing Spider-Man, alongside an alternate, more comic-book-styled version. Other characters making an appearance are Spider-Man 2099 from the future, the monochromatic Spider-Man Noir, Peni Parker's mech SP//dr, and the most talked-about addition: Peter Porker, a.k.a. Spider-Ham. His unsettlingly realistic art style has already sparked considerable discussion online.

Notably, the Spider-Ham card appears to incorporate the new "Animal" mechanic, which will be featured in the upcoming "Bloomburrow" set, and includes ten of that series' primary creature types. With the "Universes Beyond" series officially integrated into the Standard format, players will be able to include these new cards in their competitive decks, opening up new avenues for creative deckbuilding.

While frequent crossovers aren't always welcome news for some veteran players, Lead Designer Mark Rosewater recently conceded that the "Universes Beyond" initiative "is not a bottomless pit," acknowledging the finite number of popular IPs available for collaboration. This Spider-Man series, he suggested, might just be a rare standout.
