One by one, LEGO bricks offer infinite possibilities; with imagination, you can create anything. The world is full of passionate LEGO enthusiasts who meticulously craft astonishing works. Today, we'll be looking at the recent My Neighbor Totoro (となりのトトロ) themed creation by renowned LEGO creator Jayfa (Joss Ivanwood).
Jayfa's LEGO brick creations include Totoro, the Catbus, and the sisters Satsuki and Mei. Jayfa stated that he has always greatly admired Studio Ghibli's art style, but fully interpreting it with LEGO parts presented a significant challenge.
Firstly, Jayfa insisted on using a combination of medium nougat and dark brown to faithfully reproduce the Catbus's colors as depicted in its original design. He also mentioned that the variety of parts available in these two colors is quite limited, which severely restricted his choices during construction. This difficulty is something that any LEGO MOC builder can deeply appreciate. But looking at the final Catbus model, this editor can only say, truly, it's Jayfa! He's practically a superhero!
The construction of the Catbus's face alone showcases Jayfa's pursuit of detail and his brilliant use of parts. From the shaping of the teeth, the use of thin bar elements to represent the pupils, to the full, voluminous feel of the ears – it's all outstanding. Coupled with the smoothly curved bus body, the neatly arranged legs, and a tail that genuinely seems to have a furry texture, this Catbus is absolutely stunning in both its form and proportions.
Only after completing the Catbus did Jayfa begin assembling Totoro, Satsuki, and Mei, with the goal of achieving the most accurate proportions. According to Jayfa, building Totoro at this size with LEGO parts was just right for him, allowing him to utilize printed eye elements and various curved grey parts. To give Totoro's face a three-dimensional quality, Jayfa dedicated significant effort to the internal structure and angle design, ultimately resulting in a piece that exudes vitality from every angle. Although Satsuki and Mei, due to their size, omit most details, they still possess a remarkably lifelike essence. Truly incredible!
