No Director's Cut for "Fantastic Four: First Steps": Director Cites Massive VFX Hurdles

Despite largely positive reviews for Marvel's "The Fantastic Four: First Steps," some audiences and critics have widely noted a rushed third act and the absence of several scenes featured in trailers and TV spots, sparking speculation about a potential director's cut.

However, director Matt Shakman recently shut down such speculation, stating in an interview that a director's cut is "completely impossible."

Speaking with Elite Daily, Shakman explained that the cut content involved extensive visual effects, making post-production work incredibly complex. "No, unfortunately it's not possible," Shakman stated. "There are too many visual effects involved... it's completely undoable."

He further noted that while Marvel has occasionally released extended versions or included deleted scenes on physical media, a complete director's cut has never been their standard practice.

Following the film's release, many fans observed that several scenes from the trailers were missing from the theatrical cut. These included more interactions of the Fantastic Four in space, Johnny Storm's confrontation with and subsequent fall to Earth after facing the Silver Surfer, and a particularly tense dialogue sequence between Reed and Sue. Sources indicate that the studio opted for significant plot compression and cuts to keep the runtime under two hours, which ultimately contributed to the perceived rushed pacing of the film's third act.

Unfortunately, the villainous Red Ghost, portrayed by John Malkovich and ultimately cut from the film, is unlikely to reappear via a director's cut, dashing fan hopes. Nevertheless, "The Fantastic Four: First Steps" still marks a spectacular and robust new beginning for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
