Former 'Mr. Fantastic' Star Ioan Gruffudd Reveals Why 'Fantastic Four 3' Never Happened, Deleted Wolverine Cameo, and Potential MCU Return

With the upcoming Marvel Studios film "The Fantastic Four" on the horizon, the cast of the early 2000s "Fantastic Four" movies is once again drawing attention.

Ioan Gruffudd, who famously portrayed Mr. Fantastic in the 2005 and 2007 films, recently sat down with Vulture to discuss behind-the-scenes stories, the unfulfilled trilogy plans, and his thoughts on a potential return to the MCU.

Gruffudd recalled that the two "Fantastic Four" films, released in 2005 and 2007, were initially conceived as a trilogy. He, along with co-stars Jessica Alba, Chris Evans, and Michael Chiklis, were all set for the third installment, but 20th Century Fox inexplicably shelved the project.

"We were meant to make three films," Gruffudd told Vulture. "The second one didn't do badly, and I particularly loved working with Doug Jones, who played the Silver Surfer. His physical performance was incredible."

He also revealed that during filming, a scene was reshot featuring Reed Richards transforming into Wolverine as a tribute to Hugh Jackman, but it was ultimately cut from the theatrical release.

"I shot that scene in Vancouver, and Jessica was in New York," he explained. "We weren't in the same frame, but it looked seamless. It's a shame that didn't make it into the film; I'm a huge fan of Wolverine!"

Despite mixed critical reception, "Fantastic Four" earned a respectable $330 million worldwide, with its sequel, "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer," pulling in $300 million. With fans eager for his return, the question remains: could Gruffudd don the blue suit once more as a variant of Mr. Fantastic? "No one has approached me about a new film yet," Gruffudd admitted, "but the current multiverse is so open, who knows what could happen?"
