"High and Low" is produced and distributed by Apple Original Films and A24. The film is a remake of Akira Kurosawa's classic "High and Low," which itself was an adaptation of American author Ed McBain's novel, "King's Ransom."
The original "High and Low" tells the story of Gondo, an executive at a shoe company, who receives a ransom demand for his son. However, both parties soon realize that the kidnapped child is actually his chauffeur's son. Though Gondo has the money for the ransom, his company is in desperate need of capital, making him initially hesitant to pay. A change of heart ultimately leads Gondo to pay the ransom, but this act of kindness inadvertently traps him in a carefully orchestrated financial crisis.
The new film retains a similar plot, with minor character adjustments. Gondo is reimagined as music mogul David King, portrayed by Washington.
