After more than a decade in development, Mel Gibson's highly anticipated sequel to "The Passion of the Christ," titled "The Resurrection Of The Christ," is finally set to begin principal photography in Europe later this summer. The project, long-rumored to be a multi-film endeavor, has now been officially confirmed as a two-part cinematic event. Jim Caviezel, who returns to portray Jesus, teased two years ago that Gibson had plans for two or three sequels, a vision now solidified by the production studio.

Distributor Lionsgate recently announced that "The Resurrection Of The Christ" will be released in two installments. Part One is slated for release on March 26, 2027, coinciding with Good Friday, with Part Two following 40 days later on May 6, 2027, to mark Ascension Day.
Gibson is penning the script for "The Resurrection Of The Christ" himself, with veteran writer-director Randall Wallace, who previously collaborated with Gibson on "We Were Soldiers" and "Braveheart," serving as co-writer. Gibson hinted in an interview earlier this year that the upcoming film will feature extensive and psychedelic sequences traversing both heaven and hell.
