Star Wars Outlaws Sequel Canceled, Switch 2 Port Still Pushed Amid Fan Disappointment

The "Star Wars Outlaws" franchise, launched by Ubisoft in August 2024, appears to have reached its end. According to recent reports, Ubisoft has canceled plans for a sequel. Despite this, a Nintendo Switch 2 port of the game was still showcased at a July Partner Showcase, leaving many players feeling conflicted and dismayed.

Following its release last year, "Outlaws" received mixed reviews. While not an outright failure, the stealth-action "Star Wars" title was reportedly considered an underperformer internally at Ubisoft. Sources indicate that sequel development had already been halted, with no further content updates or story expansions planned.

Nevertheless, Ubisoft proceeded with a Switch 2 port, heavily promoting it at official events. However, the actual visual performance proved disappointing, with significantly degraded graphics and choppy, unfluid gameplay. For a handheld console capable of smoothly running "Cyberpunk 2077," such a presentation was widely criticized.

Commentators noted that the disappointment surrounding "Outlaws" stemmed not just from its perceived underperformance, but from its evident potential to have been a masterpiece. Despite its standalone narrative and fresh style, carving out a unique niche within the "Star Wars" universe, the game is now left with the lingering regret of what could have been.

One game critic remarked that while they enjoyed the game, they were unsure if they could recommend it, likening the experience to finding an excellent TV series that only aired one season, with its ending forever missing. The critic also conceded that the Switch 2 version was merely a "ghost" extending its lifespan, unlikely to alter the fact that the game had been abandoned.
