Marvel Studios recently released a new promotional video for "The Fantastic Four: First Steps," focusing on Julia Garner's portrayal of the Silver Surfer. The footage highlights nearly all her key scenes in the film, including her dialogue with Johnny Storm, the Human Torch; a space chase where she attempts to take Sue and Reed's unborn child; and flashbacks to her identity as Shalla-Bal before becoming Galactus's herald.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, screenwriter Eric Pearson discussed the differences between the original script and the final cut.
He revealed that earlier versions featured more interactions between Johnny and the Silver Surfer, noting that while it was a one-sided flirtation, it was "sweet." Pearson added that less of this was retained in the final film, but enough remained to show her being moved by Johnny's emotions and witnessing his efforts to save Earth.

Pearson described the Silver Surfer's character as partly inspired by Spock from "Star Trek." To save those she loved, she chose to suppress her emotions and focus solely on her mission. Despite her formidable power, her emotional defenses gradually break down after receiving messages from her home planet and witnessing other beings pleading for their lives. He praised Garner's portrayal of "the cries of a thousand planets" in the film as incredibly impactful.
Furthermore, Pearson's original concept had the Silver Surfer realizing she was "no longer fit for this mission" and engaging in a conversation with Johnny not in space, but in a Tahiti-like setting. There, she would sit on a surfboard, reminiscing about her aquatic homeworld, aiming to deepen her connection to Earth and lay the groundwork for her eventual return to save the world. However, this specific sequence was ultimately not used.
While Norrin Radd, the other Silver Surfer familiar to most audiences and fans, has yet to appear in the MCU, Marvel reportedly plans to give Garner's version of the Silver Surfer more opportunities in the future.
