While promoting his upcoming film "Weapons," "Barbarian" director Zach Cregger was inevitably pressed by media outlets for details on his new "Resident Evil" reboot, set to begin filming next month. Cregger recently confirmed his version would be set within the video game's universe, and in other interviews, he's now revealed even more.

Speaking to the YouTube show "Ringer Movies," Cregger stated, "This isn't going to be like 'Barbarian' or 'Weapons.' This is more like playing Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots. This is my playground, turning my brain off and making an 'Evil Dead 2' type of movie, playing with all sorts of camera techniques, and Austin Abrams is my lead. It's going to be a fun, weird, and wild story."

Cregger further elaborated, "This film will tell the story of a person going from point A to point B, almost like a real-time adventure where you delve deeper and deeper into the heart of hell. This is truly a love letter to the games because I adore them. Whether or not I secured the rights to this IP, I wanted to write this story, and I just happened to convince the people in charge of 'Resident Evil' to let me write it. In short, I'm fortunate to play in that sandbox, and I'm making this film because I believe it's going to be great."

In a recent interview with ComicBook.com, Cregger candidly admitted he hasn't seen any of the previous "Resident Evil" film adaptations produced by Sony Pictures. "I love these games, and I've played all of them. I've beaten 'Resident Evil 4' a hundred times; I'm super obsessed. So I just want to tell a story that feels like it's honoring your gameplay experience. I haven't seen the previous movies; they're not my cup of tea, but the games absolutely are."

Furthermore, Cregger has repeatedly emphasized that while he aims for fidelity to the gameplay experience, he won't be strictly faithful to existing game lore. The story will not be a remake of any established game plot, and the protagonist will be entirely original.

The new "Resident Evil" is slated for release on September 18, 2026. Abrams' character is reportedly a self-centered, unlucky courier who unexpectedly becomes a hero, tasked with protecting a young girl infected with the T-virus. Shay Hatten, co-writer of the zombie film "Army of the Dead," also contributed to the screenplay.
