Two decades ago, "The Bourne Identity" director Doug Liman helmed the blockbuster "Mr. & Mrs. Smith," a film famously known for sparking the "Brangelina" romance. Now, twenty years later, Liman is set to reunite with one half of that former power couple. The Hollywood Reporter exclusively revealed today that Liman will direct the action-thriller "The Initiative" for Universal Pictures, with Angelina Jolie confirmed to star.

The screenplay for "The Initiative" is penned by F. Scott Frazier, known for "xXx: Return of Xander Cage." Much like "Mr. & Mrs. Smith," the film is a spy thriller. Jolie will portray Brett, an elusive master spy. A new agent named Charlie joins Brett's team and quickly finds himself in a perplexing situation: he's unsure if Brett intends to kill him or if she's simply willing to go to any lengths to protect the world. Production is slated to begin early next year, with Universal and Liman reportedly keen to start filming soon.
