Amazon Prime Video's hit series "The Boys" has officially wrapped filming on its fifth and final season. Antony Starr, who portrays Homelander, took to social media to bid an emotional farewell to the character he described as "complex" and "dangerous," stating bluntly, "We created a monster."
Starr, in an Instagram post, thanked the entire cast and crew, as well as the Amazon and Sony teams who "took a gamble" on him for the role. He expressed, "This character has given me an unparalleled platform for performance and an opportunity to push boundaries, and I will be forever grateful."
He also extended gratitude to showrunner Eric Kripke, whom he called "the co-parent of this twisted gem," revealing that while the final season has yet to air, his creative journey with the character has concluded.
Since the series premiered in 2019, Homelander has remained the controversial centerpiece of "The Boys." Adapted from the comic book series of the same name, the show uses bloody satire to subvert traditional superhero tropes, following a group of vigilantes battling "The Seven." Homelander, the tyrannical leader of "The Seven," wields his immense powers and volatile temperament to control both his teammates and the world.
In May 2025, Starr publicly expressed surprise at some fans' "romanticization" of Homelander, describing the phenomenon as "surreal." He admitted that while the character is undeniably evil, the audience's continued sympathy for him was unexpected. Kripke, for his part, has consistently stated that Homelander is an ongoing metaphor for former U.S. President Donald Trump, alluding to how celebrity culture, authoritarianism, and social media can promote extreme ideologies.
Finally, Starr paid tribute to the fans: "You are the lifeblood, and without you, there would be no show. I love you deeply, and I have the utmost respect for your taste."
