Surprise Digital Release: James Gunn Reveals 'Peacemaker' Spurred Early 'Superman' VOD Debut

James Gunn's highly anticipated DC Universe reboot, "Superman," has been enjoying a strong theatrical run globally. However, Warner Bros. Discovery recently announced the film would arrive on digital platforms early, on August 15, 2025, a move that caught many viewers by surprise.

This decision sparked considerable discussion among industry insiders and fans, especially given the film's continued box office appeal. Why cut short its exclusive theatrical window? In an interview with Screen Rant, Gunn revealed the unexpected reason: it's tied to another DC project, "Peacemaker."

"Well, it's really complicated, but it's actually because of 'Peacemaker'," Gunn explained. He initially believed the series would premiere next month, but due to various uncontrollable factors, its release was moved up. "I want everyone who wants to see 'Superman' to be able to see it, even if they can't make it to theaters before 'Peacemaker' airs. That's the real reason."

While the first five episodes of "Peacemaker" Season 2 reportedly contain only subtle allusions to events in Metropolis, the early digital release of "Superman" has still left some theater owners feeling undercut.

The film's estimated global box office currently stands between $605 million and $620 million. It is projected to surpass "Iron Man's" $585.8 million tonight and cross the $250 million mark internationally. Domestically, "Superman" has already outgrossed "Aquaman" and "Joker," making it the fifth-highest-grossing DC film in US history.

However, with the digital release now imminent, box office numbers are expected to see a significant drop this weekend as audiences may opt to watch from home rather than visit cinemas. For fans who haven't yet seen the film, the wait has been considerably shortened.
