DC Comics has announced that "Wonder Woman" #25, set to release on September 17, 2025, will not only be an anniversary special but will also formally introduce a formidable new antagonist for Diana: The Matriarch.
The publisher emphasizes that this character's debut will lay the groundwork for all future "Wonder Woman" storylines.
Two years ago, writer Tom King and artist Daniel Sampere launched a new era for "Wonder Woman," introducing the formidable foe The Sovereign and giving the series a fresh direction. Now, the acclaimed duo is set to challenge fan expectations once more, adding The Matriarch to Diana's rogues' gallery and further expanding her array of adversaries.
According to DC's official solicit, after days of searching through a world overrun by rats, Wonder Woman finally locates her missing friend Etta Candy and the Amazonian fugitive Emilie. Unbeknownst to Diana, however, a "tiny herald of death" lurks nearby, a mysterious entity poised to irrevocably alter her destiny as The Matriarch's shadow looms.
The character design reveals The Matriarch in a stern and imposing stance. She wears black armor adorned with contrasting white patterns on the shoulders. Beyond the longsword clutched in her hand, her most striking features are the two rings on her fingers: one a glowing Green Lantern ring, and the other an orange ring bearing the emblem of the Legion of Super-Heroes.
In addition to the main story, issue #25 will feature multiple special covers. Alongside the primary cover by Sampere and Tomeu Morey, there will be 1:25 ratio card stock variant covers by Mark Spears, Homare, and Tran Nguyen, as well as a blank sketch card stock version, a foil variant by David Nakayama, and a "Pumpkin Spice" special card stock cover designed by Yasmine Putri.
As a landmark anniversary issue, "Wonder Woman" #25 serves not only as a culmination but also as a fresh beginning. With The Matriarch's arrival, Diana's saga is set to embark on an entirely new chapter, and readers eagerly anticipate witnessing how the Amazonian warrior will confront this pivotal turn of fate.
