Death Stranding Live-Action Film: Hideo Kojima Nearly Directed, A24 Exec Reveals

A24's upcoming live-action "Death Stranding" film, now helmed by "Pig" director Michael Sarnoski, almost saw Hideo Kojima himself take the director's chair. A24 Head of Film Noah Sacco recently confirmed that the legendary game creator was initially considered for the adaptation of his own hit game.

Speaking with "The New Yorker," Sacco recalled directly pitching the role to Kojima, even asking, "Are you sure you don't want to direct it yourself?" While Kojima's exact response remains undisclosed, he ultimately passed on the directorial duties.

Sarnoski is now officially at the helm, and his plate is full. Beyond "Death Stranding," he is also set to direct "The Death of Robin Hood," starring Hugh Jackman, for which he will also pen the screenplay.

While Kojima won't be directing, his studio, Kojima Productions, remains actively involved in the film's production. Kojima has previously stressed that this project is not a mere "game remake," but rather an endeavor to appeal to both dedicated game fans and a broader cinematic audience, stating, "This will be a film for everyone who loves movies."

The film is still in its early production stages, with no official cast or release date announced. However, Norman Reedus, who famously portrays protagonist Sam Porter Bridges in the game, has already expressed his interest in reprising the role. Furthermore, the "Death Stranding" franchise is slated to expand its universe with an animated film.

On the gaming front, "Death Stranding 2: On the Beach" officially launched in June 2025. Kojima has also revealed that he has already conceptualized "Death Stranding 3," though he currently has no immediate plans for its personal development. His current focus remains on the upcoming horror title "OD" and the ambitious sci-fi project "Physint."
