The highly anticipated video game adaptation sequel, "Mortal Kombat II," originally slated for release this fall, has suddenly been pushed back. Warner Bros. announced this morning that the film will now hit theaters on May 15 next year, instead of its previously scheduled October 24 date. To mark the announcement, an official new poster was released (see below).
According to reports from Deadline, Warner Bros. Pictures decided to delay the release, believing that a summer slot in May would be more advantageous than the crowded October Halloween window. October's lineup includes Jeremy Allen White's Bruce Springsteen biopic "Springsteen Deliver Me From Nowhere" and "Regretting You," the highly anticipated adaptation of Colleen Hoover's novel (the author of "It Ends with Us"). Furthermore, the week of Halloween often sees American audiences engaged in various activities, all of which could potentially dampen box office performance.

Simon McQuoid, who helmed the previous installment, returns to direct this sequel. Jeremy Slater, known as the showrunner for Netflix's "The Umbrella Academy" and Marvel's "Moon Knight," penned the screenplay. The narrative will continue the deadly Mortal Kombat tournament, where Earthrealm faces invasion and conquest by Shao Kahn if it suffers ten consecutive losses.
Returning cast members from the original film include Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Tadanobu Asano as Raiden, and Ludi Lin as Liu Kang. New additions to the ensemble cast feature Tati Gabrielle as Jade, Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, Martyn Ford as Shao Kahn, Ana Thu Nguyen as Queen Sindel, Desmond Chiam as King Jerrod, and, as a central figure in this installment, Karl Urban as Johnny Cage.
