Universal Pictures has been developing a "Scarface" remake for years, with multiple writers and directors attached to develop the script. The most recent iteration involved Italian filmmaker Luca Guadagnino ("Call Me By Your Name") directing a script penned by the Coen brothers, but Guadagnino eventually exited the project, leaving it dormant.
However, Universal's stalled version doesn't mean other adaptations aren't in the works. Armitage Trail's original 1930 novel, "Scarface," has entered the public domain, meaning a direct adaptation of the book does not require approval from Universal or any other entity.

Danny Ramirez (pictured above), known for his role as the "second Falcon" in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, recently launched the production company Pinstripes with his college classmate Tom Culliver. In an interview with Deadline, they shared their plans for upcoming film and television projects, which include a new adaptation of "Scarface."
Culliver stated that one of the major IPs they are currently adapting is "Scarface." He confirmed that Danny would play the titular role, and they aim to modernize the story by directly adapting the original novel. Culliver added that they are independently developing the film, with some development funds already secured. He believes the new adaptation will retain the spirit of both the 1980s Al Pacino-led film and the 1932 original, but that the time is right for a modern take, and having a talent like Danny to star is truly exciting.
