"Honest Trailer" Targets DC's "Superman": Skewers Social Media Trolls, Roasts Jor-El as "Invincible's" Omni-Man

Screen Junkies' latest "Honest Trailer" takes aim at the DCU box office hit "Superman," using its signature sharp and humorous style to highlight various controversies and intriguing details within the film.

Among the most notable points are the plot's perceived overemphasis on online trolls and the surprising appearance of Ultraman.

The trailer lampoons several plot choices, such as portraying Jor-El with an image nearly identical to Omni-Man from "Invincible," which left many viewers puzzled.

Another key talking point is the revelation that "The Hammer of Boravia" is actually Ultraman, a character who is essentially an evil doppelgänger of Superman, adding another layer of intrigue to the film's character design.

The "Honest Trailer"'s most compelling criticism, however, points to "Superman"'s excessive focus on online trolls. Many speculate this narrative choice might stem from director James Gunn's past Twitter controversies, where he was temporarily removed from directing "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" after old politically charged tweets resurfaced.

The video also highlights how the entire film, and even the broader DCU, is heavily influenced by "Gunn's style," incorporating many elements from his previous works.

Addressing these points, Gunn, in an interview about the film's global box office exceeding $600 million, admitted his biggest feelings were "relief and excitement."

He explained that "Superman" served as a proof of concept for the DCU, a challenge as difficult as "Guardians of the Galaxy" was in its time, but ultimately proving the model viable. "Once you get the rhythm, you understand what works and what doesn't, and you can clearly see the future direction of the story," Gunn stated.

Gunn further elaborated that this success now allows him greater creative freedom, no longer needing to constantly worry about the DC brand's survival. He emphasized that "Superman" resonated with audiences because the film itself had a reason to exist, rather than simply stacking characters together.

"The film conveyed a message of goodwill, and that resonated with audiences. But that doesn't mean every subsequent project I do has to be about 'goodwill'; it means there has to be a reason to tell that story," Gunn said.

In North America, "Superman" has now surpassed all but one DCEU film in box office performance, with its global gross exceeding $600 million, firmly establishing it as a crucial cornerstone for the new era of the DCU.
