Following its impressive global box office run last year, grossing over $350 million, "Alien: Romulus" was quickly greenlit for a sequel. Writer-director Fede Alvarez had already begun developing the follow-up story. While many assumed Alvarez would return to direct the second installment after the sequel was confirmed, he recently revealed in an interview with TooFab that he has decided to hand over the directorial reins to someone else.

Alvarez stated, "We just finished the script for 'Romulus,' but I'm stepping away from directing this time. I'll only be producing alongside Ridley Scott, and we're currently looking for a new filmmaker (director) to join the team. I think that's the tradition of this series — Ridley is the exception (meaning he's the only director to have helmed more than one film in the franchise) — where one creator comes in, makes a film, and then passes the baton to the next. But we wrote the story for the 'Romulus' sequel because we really loved the foundation we laid in 'Romulus,' and we want to continue that story. We love this story, and now we just need to find a director who truly wants to seize this opportunity."
