Ryan Reynolds recently admitted at the Toronto International Film Festival that he was the one who leaked the "Deadpool" test footage online in 2014. The unexpected leak sparked an overwhelming fan response, ultimately compelling 20th Century Studios to greenlight the R-rated "Deadpool" film, which then launched one of the most successful adult superhero franchises in cinematic history. 
"Yeah, I cheated a little bit," Reynolds recalled with a laugh, "but I felt like it could create interest. I'm grateful I listened to my gut, and I'm glad I did the wrong thing for the right reasons." He added, "Some asshole leaked it onto the internet, and I'm looking at myself in the mirror brushing my teeth, thinking, 'Dude, what did you do? That could be illegal!'"
Director Tim Miller had originally produced the CGI test footage for "Deadpool" back in 2012, fully showcasing the character's signature fourth-wall breaks, crude humor, and violent action. 
At the time, the studio considered Deadpool a "fringe character," and with Reynolds' "Green Lantern" having flopped at the box office, the project remained in limbo for years. However, after the test footage leaked in 2014, the intense fan reaction forced Fox to greenlight the film within just 24 hours.
The decision proved to be a resounding success. The 2016 "Deadpool" grossed nearly $800 million worldwide, and 2018's "Deadpool 2" achieved similar impressive results. The upcoming "Deadpool & Wolverine," uniting him with Wolverine in 2024, has already shattered records, becoming the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time with over $1.3 billion.
"I was obsessed with this character because he knows he's in a comic book movie. That kind of meta-humor was fresh, and I believed it could work," Reynolds stated.
As for the future, Reynolds' continued portrayal of Deadpool remains unconfirmed. Rumors currently suggest he might make an appearance in "Avengers: Doomsday" in some capacity, though he is not expected to become a core member of the Avengers.
