The Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) recently announced that veteran actor Sean Astin, widely recognized for his roles in "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy and "The Goonies," has been elected as the union's next national president. Astin secured the position with 79.25% of the vote, and his two-year term is effective immediately. Additionally, Michelle Hurd (pictured below), a television actress known for series such as "Star Trek: Picard," has been named the new secretary-treasurer.

Prior to Astin's election, SAG-AFTRA was led by Fran Drescher, star of the classic sitcom "The Nanny." Statistics indicate a lower voter turnout for this election compared to previous years. While SAG-AFTRA boasts over 117,000 members nationwide, only 17% cast their ballots this year. When Drescher ran for re-election two years ago, approximately 23% of members overwhelmingly supported her. In 2021, when Drescher was first elected, over 26% of members submitted their votes, highlighting a clear year-over-year decline in member participation.
