Long considered an almost god-like figure, Superman has rarely been truly challenged in comic book history. However, recent remarks from James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios and director of the upcoming "Superman" film, have ignited a fierce debate among fans.
During a recent interview, Gunn openly agreed with the interviewer's assertion that Green Lantern could defeat Superman, noting the character's immense power and subtly hinting at the future power dynamics within the DC Universe.
The topic quickly went viral on social media, with some fans arguing that the power of the Green Lantern Corps' rings is indeed a credible threat to Superman, while others staunchly maintain that the Man of Steel remains an unparalleled symbol of invincibility.
Historically in the comics, Batman has managed to subdue Superman using Kryptonite and advanced technology, and the Green Lantern Corps has tested his limits with sheer willpower, though they rarely emerged victorious.
Gunn further elaborated that he has intentionally "depowered" Superman slightly within the DCU, aiming to make the character more human and relatable, thereby creating more opportunities for other heroes to shine. Audiences have already had a preliminary taste of Green Lantern's formidable potential through the character of Guy Gardner in recent cinematic appearances.
Gunn also shared new details about the upcoming "Lanterns" series, which will introduce older versions of Hal Jordan and John Stewart. Rumors also suggest a potential Superman cameo in the show.
He emphasized that "Lanterns" will be a "very realistic cosmic police procedural," aiming to ground the seemingly fantastical Green Lantern concept in a more tangible reality. The eight-episode series will star Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre, crafting an entirely new narrative.
Regardless of the ongoing fan debate, Gunn's statements clearly signal a more dynamic power balance within the future DC Universe. Whether Green Lantern can truly defeat Superman may well become a pivotal plot point and a major source of suspense in upcoming storylines.
