In 2007, Sony Pictures Animation released "Surf's Up," a unique animated film presented in a mockumentary style. While its box office performance wasn't stellar, grossing $152 million worldwide against a $100 million budget, it received overwhelmingly positive critical acclaim and earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature at the 80th Oscars. A decade later, Sony followed up with "Surf's Up 2: Wave Mania" in 2017, but this sequel was released directly to home video and digital platforms. Its production quality was widely considered inferior to the original, drawing significant negative reviews.

Now, eight years later, Sony is once again revisiting the "Surf's Up" franchise. Entertainment outlet Deadline exclusively reported today that Sony has tapped Canadian independent animation studio Atomic Cartoons to produce a new "Surf's Up" animated series. Each episode of the show will run approximately 11 minutes and target children aged 6 to 9. Lienne Sawatsky, Dan Williams, and John Hazlett, the three creators behind the animated series "The Guava Juice Show," are set to serve as showrunners and write the scripts.
