Ana Nogueira, known for her role in "The Vampire Diaries," has successfully transitioned into screenwriting in recent years. After her 2016 Off-Broadway debut, "Empathitrax," garnered significant attention, she began receiving offers to write fantasy and sci-fi projects. This eventually led to Warner Bros. tapping her to pen a version of a "Supergirl" film for the then-DCEU. 
While that particular project was shelved with the formation of DC Studios, co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran ultimately entrusted her with the script for the new DCU film, "Supergirl."
According to a report from Variety, Nogueira, though not a traditional comic book enthusiast, has a deep affection for superhero cinema. She emphasized that Supergirl, having personally witnessed the destruction of Krypton, makes it difficult to portray the character as an overly "sunny and optimistic" version. Inspired by Tom King and Bilquis Evely's acclaimed comic series, "Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow," Nogueira is committed to bringing a "rougher, darker, sharper, and more humorous" Kryptonian girl to the big screen. 
Beyond "Supergirl," Nogueira has also been confirmed to be involved in writing scripts for DC Studios' "Teen Titans" and "Wonder Woman" projects, signaling the studio's significant confidence in her talent.
The film is set to follow the comic's narrative, depicting Supergirl and her super-dog Krypto embarking on a cosmic journey on her 21st birthday. Along the way, they encounter Ruthye and become embroiled in a brutal quest for revenge. The story is also an integral part of the larger Superman narrative and is expected to echo "Man of Tomorrow."
"Supergirl" is currently slated for release on June 26, 2026.
