The beloved "Moomins" series, created by Finnish-Swedish author Tove Jansson, is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year, and to mark the occasion, a major new project has been announced. Variety exclusively reported today that Annapurna Pictures is developing a new "Moomins" feature film, with "Steven Universe" creator Rebecca Sugar (pictured below) set to write and direct.

This "Moomins" film holds particular significance as it marks the first time a U.S. company will lead the production of a "Moomins" movie. While Japan, Finland, Poland, Austria, and other countries have previously been authorized to produce numerous "Moomins" television series and feature films, this project is a first for American production. Additionally, Julia Pistor, known for producing "The Spiderwick Chronicles" film and multiple "Rugrats" movies, is confirmed to join the project as a producer.
