Two months ago, news broke that Leonardo DiCaprio was quietly in talks to star in Michael Mann's long-gestating "Heat" sequel, a development that surprised many given DiCaprio's history of avoiding sequels, especially those where he wasn't in the original. Now, two months later, outlets like Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter have further confirmed his potential involvement. Deadline specifically reported that DiCaprio is considering taking on the role of Chris Shiherlis, originally played by Val Kilmer, who passed away from pneumonia in April.

Previous reports indicated that Warner Bros. Pictures was hesitant about Mann's budget demands, which reportedly exceeded $200 million. Today, it's confirmed that Warner Bros. has indeed withdrawn its investment, allowing Mann to seek other studio partners for the sequel. He ultimately secured Amazon and MGM subsidiary United Artists, with "F1" ace producer Jerry Bruckheimer also joining as a producer.
The Hollywood Reporter also noted today that Mann's initial budget proposal to Warner Bros. was precisely $230 million. He later conceded to $170 million, but Warner Bros. was only willing to accept $135 million to $140 million, with an offer to increase it to $150 million if Mann committed to a third installment.

In addition to DiCaprio, previously rumored stars Austin Butler and Adam Driver are still in negotiations. New names emerging include Bradley Cooper, making all four A-list actors currently in talks.
Given that "Heat 2" functions as both a prequel and a sequel, it will explore the younger years of established characters. It was widely speculated that Butler, whose appearance is similar to Val Kilmer's, would play Chris Shiherlis, while Driver would portray a younger version of Robert De Niro's Neil McCauley. DiCaprio was initially thought to be in line for the major antagonist, Otis Wardell, a character from the "Heat 2" novel known for committing multiple rapes. However, with DiCaprio now potentially stepping into Val Kilmer's role, Wardell might be played by Cooper. Another source, however, suggests Cooper is a backup option for DiCaprio, should the latter ultimately decline the part.

"Heat 2" is adapted from Mann's prequel/sequel novel published a few years ago. The plot weaves together two intersecting timelines: one set a day after the events of the first film, following Vincent Hanna (Al Pacino) as he continues his pursuit of the fugitive Chris Shiherlis (Val Kilmer's character); the other is set seven years prior to the original, detailing other heists committed by Neil McCauley (De Niro's character), Shiherlis, and their crew, while Hanna is tracking a different fugitive. These seemingly unrelated experiences eventually converge in an unexpected, fated collision seven years later.
