Mel Gibson's long-awaited sequel to "The Passion of the Christ," titled "The Resurrection of the Christ," was announced as a two-part film two months ago. The production was recently gearing up to begin filming in Rome, Italy. However, just ahead of principal photography, gossip outlet Page Six dropped a bombshell: the lead roles are being recast.
According to Page Six, Jim Caviezel and Monica Bellucci will not return as Jesus and Mary Magdalene. The report indicates that the significant time gap since the original film would necessitate extensive de-aging visual effects to maintain continuity for both actors. However, the high cost of these effects, coupled with scheduling conflicts for Caviezel and Bellucci, led to the decision. After multiple negotiations and discussions, the production was forced to forgo the original cast and seek new actors.

Both parts of "The Resurrection of the Christ" are slated for release in 2027. The first installment is scheduled for March 26, 2027 – Good Friday – with the second part following 40 days later on May 6, 2027 – Ascension Day.
"The Resurrection of the Christ" is once again being written by Gibson. He is joined by veteran screenwriter-director Randall Wallace, who previously collaborated with Gibson on "We Were Soldiers" and "Braveheart," as co-writer. Earlier this year, Gibson teased in an interview that the film would feature extensive, psychedelic scenes spanning heaven and hell.
