Kaiyodo 'ARTPLA SCULPTURE WORKS King Ghidorah Re: Imagination' Prototype Revealed – Shinobu Matsumura Reinterprets the Original 1964 Design!

Japanese model maker Kaiyodo recently exhibited the prototype under development for its latest work in the non-articulated plastic assembly model kit 'ARTPLA' series: "ARTPLA SCULPTURE WORKS King Ghidorah Re: Imagination". This piece is based on the 1964 Godzilla series film "Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster" and is scheduled for release within 2026.

The highly popular monster in the "Godzilla" film series, "King Ghidorah", first appeared in the 1964 film "Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster". This version of King Ghidorah is depicted as a space monster that destroyed Venusian civilization in just 3 days, 5000 years ago. It transformed into a meteorite and descended upon modern Japan with a meteor shower. Each of its three heads can emit "Gravity Beams" that cause targets to lose gravity, and its massive wings not only allow for high-speed flight but also generate powerful storms.

"ARTPLA SCULPTURE WORKS King Ghidorah Re: Imagination", like its predecessor Godzilla (1954), has its prototype sculpted by Shinobu Matsumura, who has worked at Kaiyodo for many years and is known as Japan's foremost biological sculptor. The sculpt does not perfectly reproduce the suit used during filming, but rather reinterprets it based on promotional photos used at the time, expressing the presence and vitality of King Ghidorah as a colossal cosmic creature.

The overall diorama features the Fuji foothills valley and railway bridge that appeared in the film, with King Ghidorah appearing with its massive wings spread, creating a scene full of dramatic tension. From the currently exhibited prototype, it can be seen that King Ghidorah not only features intricately sculpted dense scales across its body and textures on its wing membranes, but its three fierce heads also each possess subtle sculptural differences. The design of the overall parts separation is also highly anticipated.
