DC Studios co-CEO and director James Gunn recently confirmed in an interview that the iconic villain Darkseid will not serve as the ultimate antagonist for the new DCU.
Gunn explained that director Zack Snyder had already presented Darkseid with a distinctive style in the previous DCEU. Furthermore, given the character's strong resemblance to the MCU's Thanos, the current DC Universe will pursue a fresh creative direction.

Speaking in a joint interview with several superhero-focused YouTube channels, Gunn revealed, "It is not our plan to make Darkseid the ultimate villain at this time." He noted his admiration for comic legend Jack Kirby's "New Gods" and confirmed development on an adult animated series for "Mister Miracle," a related character. However, Gunn emphasized that this does not mean Darkseid will dominate the new universe's main storyline.
"Darkseid and Thanos share many similarities, and their appearances are quite close," Gunn added. "Considering Zack Snyder has already presented him in his own cool way, and with Thanos's immense impact in the Marvel Universe, it's not appropriate for Darkseid to be the DCU's ultimate enemy right now."

While Gunn did not directly disclose the DCU's future primary threats, industry speculation suggests the 2027 film "Superman: Man of Tomorrow" could introduce Brainiac, potentially even prompting Superman and his arch-nemesis Lex Luthor to temporarily unite against the alien menace.
On another note, Gunn addressed the future of "Peacemaker." He confirmed that the series will not receive a third season, but John Cena's Peacemaker will continue to play a crucial role within the DCU.
"He's very important to me," Gunn stated, "and I hope to make these secondary characters new aces, as iconic as Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superman."
According to the current timeline, the DCU is set to release "Supergirl" and "Clayface" films, along with the series "Lanterns," in 2026. This will be followed by "Superman: Man of Tomorrow" in 2027. Additionally, Matt Reeves' "The Batman: Part II," which belongs to an independent universe, is slated for release on October 1 of the same year.
