Hollywood actress Elizabeth Olsen recently revealed in a cover interview with InStyle magazine that she is no longer accepting Hollywood film offers without a guaranteed theatrical release.
"If a film ultimately ends up on a streaming platform, that's fine; but I don't want to make movies where 'streaming is everything'," Olsen stated. She emphasized that the true value of cinema lies in audiences collectively experiencing a film in theaters, which she believes is the core of film culture.
Olsen, who debuted in the 2011 independent film "Martha Marcy May Marlene" and is known for her indie acting prowess, explained that while she's open to independent films eventually being sold to streaming platforms, she won't consider participating in projects from major studios that lack a theatrical release plan. She views movie-watching as a "communal experience," akin to a sporting event, where audiences gather to share excitement and connection—something no home screen can replicate.
Since her role in 2022's "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness," Olsen has stepped away from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, focusing instead on independent productions. These include 2023's "His Three Daughters," 2024's "The Assessment," and the upcoming A24 fantasy romantic comedy "Eternity," slated for a Thanksgiving release. Notably, even though "His Three Daughters" was distributed by Netflix, it still received a limited theatrical run, satisfying her commitment to a "big-screen premiere."
Reflecting on her Marvel work, Olsen expressed nostalgia for her time as Scarlet Witch, stating, "Making those movies was fun and absurd. We're all adults, yet we're like kids in a playground, getting to return to this character for a decade—it's both familiar and nostalgic." She also praised the scale and professionalism of Marvel sets, noting that hundreds of people collaborate to achieve the special effects, stunts, and camera movements, calling it a spectacular artistic collaboration.
While "Doctor Strange 2" marked her last live-action appearance as Scarlet Witch, Olsen hasn't entirely closed the door on a return, stating, "If there's an opportunity to step into her shoes again, I wouldn't hesitate."
