Four years after its acclaimed release, the apocalyptic sci-fi animated film "The Mitchells vs. the Machines," produced by Sony Pictures and distributed by Netflix, is officially getting a sequel. The film, which garnered widespread critical praise and an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature at the 94th Oscars, will see a follow-up now in development, with production slated to begin early next year. Variety exclusively broke the news on behalf of the studios, much to the delight of fans.

The sequel will feature a new directing and writing team. Original directors Michael Rianda and Jeff Rowe will not return. Instead, Guillermo Martinez, who served as story supervisor on the first film, will co-direct alongside JP Sans, known for co-directing "The Bad Guys 2." The script will be penned by sisters Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin, acclaimed writers from "Bob's Burgers."
However, the acclaimed producing duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, known for "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse," are set to return as executive producers for the second installment. Their production company, Lord Miller, will also continue its involvement in the project.
