The Wrap exclusively reported today that Legendary Pictures has tapped Zeb Wells, one of the co-writers of "Deadpool & Wolverine," to reimagine the classic American sci-fi hero Buck Rogers for a brand-new film adaptation. Legendary originally acquired the rights to the character in 2020, with ambitious plans to build a cross-media universe spanning feature films, live-action series, and animated shows around him. However, it's currently unknown if the series plans are still active; the focus for now is solely on film development.

Buck Rogers, a comic character who debuted in the late 1920s, is a World War I veteran. After returning to civilian life and working in mining, he was accidentally trapped in a collapsed mine and exposed to a radioactive gas, causing him to fall into a coma for 500 years. Upon waking and emerging from the mine, he discovers the world embroiled in another major war, this time involving alien races.
For nearly a century, Buck Rogers has been adapted into various films and television series. Legendary itself once planned a TV series starring George Clooney, but that version was ultimately scrapped. The latest attempt is a new film reboot.
