Kate Hudson, currently promoting her new music biopic "Song Sung Blue" , recently opened up in an interview with Variety magazine about the career development hurdles she faces as an actress in Hollywood.
Hudson stated, "This industry definitely limits your development. After 'Almost Famous' and 'How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days,' everyone wanted me to do romantic comedies. I love doing those types of films, but it's not the only genre I want to do. Every time I try to transition, people still look at me with a certain preconceived notion. When you first start out, you don't think, 'I can't wait to be typecast.' But the reality is it's going to happen, and everyone experiences it from their own perspective."

Hudson specifically pointed out that it's harder for actresses to fight for a career transition than for male actors: "Exactly. Once an actress becomes a big star in a certain genre, it's hard for people to see her succeed in other types of films. Opportunities for transition often favor men; they have more chances to cross genre boundaries. I don't think it's intentional; it's just how the industry typically operates. Women are also expected to promote films in ways men aren't; people want to know what we actresses are wearing, which red carpets we walk, what events we attend. Women put in more effort in this regard. However, if two films we star in don't perform well at the box office, the consequences seem to be more severe. It's brutal, but that's the reality of the industry. You can only hope to continue creating good work and be involved in the production of more projects."
