GTA 5's Lost Trevor DLC: Rockstar Co-Founder Dan Houser Reveals It Was "Halfway Done" Before Being Scrapped

"Grand Theft Auto V" has been widely regarded as a pinnacle of open-world gaming since its 2013 release, yet many players have long lamented the absence of single-player story DLC, unlike its predecessor, "Grand Theft Auto IV".

Now, Rockstar Games co-founder and former lead writer Dan Houser has confirmed for the first time on the "Lex Fridman Podcast" that the fabled "Trevor's Secret Agent" DLC did indeed exist but was ultimately canceled due to development resource allocation and business considerations.

Houser stated that the DLC was originally planned to let players take on the role of protagonist Trevor as a secret agent, with a story style that was humorously satirical.

"It was a fun idea, but it never really got off the ground, and it was never finished. It was probably abandoned halfway through," he admitted. Houser emphasized that it was a result of development trade-offs, noting that if they had insisted on completing that project, "we probably wouldn't have been able to make 'Red Dead Redemption 2'."

In fact, rumors about this DLC have circulated for years. Trevor's voice actor, Steven Ogg, previously revealed that he had participated in filming scenes where Trevor went undercover as a federal agent, but those materials were later "shelved and never heard from again."

Former Rockstar game developer Joe Robino also corroborated this, stating that the company ultimately decided to halt single-player DLC development because the team's main focus shifted to "Red Dead Redemption 2" and "GTA Online" became a "cash cow."

Robino recalled that the original DLC content was quite exciting. "We spent a lot of time and money, but the online mode was too popular, making it difficult to convince the company to return to single-player content." He revealed that some of the material was later integrated into "GTA Online" missions, such as the 2018 "Doomsday Heist" and jetpack equipment.

During the interview, Houser also mentioned that he once wanted to create a game called "GTA: Zombies."

"That would have been a 'GTA'-style zombie game, which I think would have been quite interesting," he said, adding that he still loves single-player story content and hopes to continue this creative model in his new company, Absurd Ventures. "I love telling stories, and I love letting players experience more new chapters within an existing world."

Whether Rockstar will revive the tradition of single-player DLC for the long-awaited "Grand Theft Auto VI" remains unknown. However, Houser's candid remarks finally shed light on the truth behind the "lost Trevor's Secret Agent" chapter.
