According to Variety, Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation have finalized a partnership agreement, with the sequel now in development and expected to hit screens in 2029.
Rumors of multiple follow-ups for "KPop Demon Hunters" had circulated earlier this year, and now, the first sequel has been officially confirmed to be in production. However, due to the lengthy and complex production cycle of animated films, the release date is still some time away. For an original work that has sparked a global phenomenon, the wait appears to be well worth it.
Since its debut in June, "KPop Demon Hunters" has achieved remarkable success, becoming one of the most-watched titles on Netflix. It even surpassed popular series like "Squid Game," "Wednesday," and "Stranger Things." According to the latest data, the film remained at number two on Netflix's global top movies chart last week, trailing only "House of Dynamite," and has consistently ranked in the top ten for 20 consecutive weeks. With 14 million views last week alone, its success is nothing short of phenomenal.
While there were once widespread rumors of a live-action remake, director and creator Maggie Kang debunked these speculations, emphasizing that "KPop Demon Hunters" is best suited for animation. She stated it would be "hard to imagine these characters in a live-action world."
