Ruby Rose Slams Sydney Sweeney Over "Christy" Box Office Flop: "You Ruined This Movie, Idiot"

Sydney Sweeney's boxing biopic "Christy," based on the life of boxer Christy Martin, underperformed at the North American box office following its release. Despite opening in over 2,000 theaters with a production budget of $15 million, the film only grossed $1.3 million in its opening weekend.

As the film's box office struggles mounted, controversy escalated, with "Batwoman" star Ruby Rose publicly slamming Sweeney on Threads. Rose directly stated that Sweeney "ruined this movie," sparking widespread debate.

Ruby Rose revealed she had previously been approached for an early script of "Christy," with the opportunity to play Christy Martin's girlfriend, Sherry Lusk. She highly praised that version of the story, calling it "life-changing." Rose noted that the original production team included many actors familiar with the boxing world and even LGBTQ+ identities, making "Christy" particularly meaningful to her.

However, following the film's disappointing performance, Rose angrily accused Sweeney's public relations team of defending the movie by claiming it was "filmed for the people." She directly stated: "No one wants to see someone who hates us pretend to be us. You're an idiot, you ruined this movie, Christy deserves better."

Rose's comments were widely interpreted by netizens as targeting Sweeney's alleged pro-Republican political stance. Multiple media outlets, including The Guardian, have reported that Sweeney registered as a Republican voter in Florida in 2024, a move that even drew public praise from former President Trump. While Sweeney has never explicitly confirmed her political affiliations, public discussion on the matter has persisted.

"Variety" reported that it had reached out to Sweeney's representatives and "Christy" production and distribution company Black Bear for comment, while also contacting Rose's management team. However, sources indicated that any contact Rose had with the project occurred before Black Bear became involved, meaning her participation never progressed to a formal stage of film development.
