The Asylum, renowned for its low-budget parody films and original B-movies, boasts its most famous IP in the "Sharknado" franchise, which has garnered a significant global following. To date, the series has spawned five sequels and even a spin-off trilogy, "Lavalantula." However, the main storyline of the "Sharknado" series concluded in 2018 with its sixth installment, "The Last Sharknado: It's About Time." Even "Lavalantula" has not seen a follow-up in quite some time. Yet, The Asylum has now unexpectedly announced a new project.

Entertainment trade Variety exclusively reported today that The Asylum is already developing a "Sharknado" prequel, tentatively titled "Sharknado Origins." Production is slated to begin in the final two months of this year, targeting a summer release next year. Anthony Ferrante, who directed the first six installments, will return to helm the project. The plot will reportedly follow protagonists Finn and April as they encounter the very first sharknado during their initial meeting. The Asylum later confirmed the prequel plans and released a teaser poster (pictured above).
