"Cyberpunk 2077," the RPG once lambasted for its disastrous launch, has officially become CD Projekt's "primary revenue source," comprehensively surpassing "The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt" in post-launch sales velocity.
According to CD Projekt's latest financial report, "Cyberpunk 2077" has now surpassed 35 million units in global cumulative sales. Its performance during the same post-launch period even outstrips the company's previously most iconic title, "The Witcher 3."
CD Projekt CFO Piotr Nielubowicz stated in the financial report briefing, "Players have now purchased over 35 million copies of 'Cyberpunk 2077,' which is a better achievement than 'The Witcher 3' managed during the same post-launch period." While "The Witcher 3"'s total sales have reached 60 million units, still significantly higher than "Cyberpunk 2077," the latter's faster post-launch pace signals a successful rebuilding of CD Projekt's brand reputation and market trust.
"Cyberpunk 2077" successfully reversed player sentiment through multiple major post-launch updates, core system redesigns, and the release of the high-quality expansion "Phantom Liberty." Its recent availability on Nintendo Switch 2 and Mac platforms, coupled with its inclusion in PlayStation Plus, has generated a new wave of sales peaks, further boosting "Phantom Liberty"'s strong performance on PlayStation.
Nielubowicz reported that CD Projekt's net profit for the current period reached 193 million Polish Złoty (approximately $53 million USD), more than two and a half times that of the same period last year, and even approaching the peak levels seen during "Phantom Liberty"'s launch in 2023. While the expansion itself generated substantial profits for the company last year, the continued strong sales of the base game have refocused CD Projekt's operational efforts on the "Cyberpunk" brand.
From sparking lawsuits, refund controversies, regulatory investigations, and even causing the company's market value to plummet by over 75%, to now becoming the core driver of the entire company's profitability, "Cyberpunk 2077"'s comeback stands as one of the most iconic turnaround stories in recent gaming history.
